Help With Body On Jeep Cherokee

The driver side door top hinge of my 1984 Jeep Cherokee has broken off the body. It appears the welds broke away. It took with it three dime size holes in the body where it was welded.

Any suggestions on how to repair? I have a small home shop with stick, gas and mig welder.

Is there a way to replace the who portion of that inside section?

If anyone has come across this I would appreciate any suggestions for repair.

Thank you. Josh

You can rebuild the inside panel and weld them back on. It was a defect and some folks managed to get repairs under warranty even.

This happened to my 1996 Cherokee, and I lived with it for a few weeks (which was humorous to passers-by, as the door would drop about 8" when I opened it up). I took it to a body shop just outside of Pittsburgh and they fixed it for me. Not sure how feasible it is to repair with the welding gear you have, or how exactly the jokers at the body shop fixed it.

And the junked 1994 that I'm messing with has that same weld joint wiggly and ready to go, so it's probably not uncommon.

When mine let go, it took a square the size of the hinge with it, leaving a gaping hole in the pillar(somebody had just re-welded them in the past). I took a piece of 3/16 plate steel and fished up inside the hole. Drilled holes through the pillar and the plate. Welded nuts to the back of the plate, fished it back into the hole and bolted it down. Then I marked and drilled through the hinge and the plate, fished it back out, welded nuts on the back of those holes and bolted the whole thing back together. I've done 3 Cherokee's that way(both of my wife's and my son's)and never had a problem. Had to buy some door alignment shims for one of 'em to get the door to close right. I think that wias the first one I did...after that I measured more carefully.

gettin' old, talking to myself. Forgot to mention, it helps to remove or at least loosen the bolts and pull the front fender out of the way.
