Interior Door Handles: '93 Cherokee XJ

The driver's side interior door handle on my '93 XJ is somewhat suspect. Although it still does the job opening the door, it just kind of hangs there... i.e. it doesn't "spring" back into place after I pull on it to open the door. Now, the other night, as my wife is exiting the passenger side, some sort of spring breaks, pieces flying, and that door handle no longer functions at all. Getting out of the vehicle being somewhat of a safety concern, I'd like to get both of them fixed. Any leads on the part needed and where I could locate them?

Thanks.

There are a lot of Cherokees in the wrecking yards around here. I would be going there for parts after I removed both handles to make sure they are the only thing broken.

Rolling down the window to let yourself out sure looks silly eh... ;-)

Yeah... I've spent most of the morning sending out "feelers" to the various bone yards in the state here. Hopefully, something will turn up.

Thanks, Jeff...

At this point, I believe that what I need is some sort of spring. When the wife pulled on the handle of the passenger side the other night a piece of it (the spring) came sailing across the passenger compartment into my lap.

The driver's side handle will still open the door, but the handle itself doesn't "spring" back into its resting place after being pulled... rather, it just kind of hangs out. I'm guessing a spring here, too, right?

Thanks, Bill. I'm guessing this won't be as easy as it oughta be.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is going to be a job for when it isn't snowing and -10 degrees.

Now that sounds like mine. Below 15 degrees or so I have to be very careful not to push the button before unlocking the door. If I (or more generally, my wife) tries to open the door before unlocking it, we are in for a short delay while I fiddle with the lock. Something is dragging and not moving into position where the key can activate the lock mechanism. The is a spot in the travel of the lock button which will do the same thing - can't open the door, can't work the lock. Works fine after a little heat is applied - think it's a commentary on living where it gets that cold?

Mark, I can't help but wonder what IS a good job outside when it's snowing and -10!

Running a yellow snow concession stand?

If the wind isn't blowing, you can get used to it reasonably quickly, enough that if you are doing something like cutting wood, lopping trees, etc. you would get warm enough to need to take off a heavy coat. . . . until the wind starts.

Then what?

Usually, if it is snowing, it isn't much below 0ºC, or 32ºF.
