Hello, I am asking this for a friend of mine. he recently purchased an 86 Cherokee with the Command-Trac system, and needs to be able to tell which rear axle is on it. He was told at autozone that it was either a Dana 44 or a Dana 35 (he said that Autozone said it was either a 44 or a 38... But, i dont think they made a 38.. So, i am assuming they said 35 and he misheard..)
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Most likely a D35 (slight possibility of Chry. 8-1/4, I don't know the circumstances for this one)

I don't recall an XJ Cherokee ever having an AMC 20. More than likely it was a
Chrysler? It was f*cked up from the get-go...by the company that stopped making the CJ. :-)

With all due respect Bill, the XJ saw improvement under Chrysler... better engines, transmissions, FI systems, computer, ABS, cooling system. In my opinion, the early XJ's were a revolutionary platform but were built on spare parts... AMC picking through leftovers from an abandoned GM plant.
