need help buying used 99 - 01 XJ

Okay, I am looking for a 99 -01 XJ w/ 4.0L and am wondering what the different 4wd systems are on the vehicles and also which options for axles that came with them. I'd like to try and get something a little beefier in case I want to throw a couple inch lift in it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

For the XJ you had Command-Trac and Selec-Trac options for the transfer case. The Selec-Trac is the better (and slightly stronger) option.

As for axle options, fronts are Dana 30 and the rear has the Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25. From what I've read the 8.25 is very similar to the Dana

44 so that your best bet. The Dana 44 was not a option for the years in question as far as I know.

With or without your planned lift I would look for a XJ with the Up-Country option as you get tow hooks, skid plates for the front suspension, transfer case and fuel tank plus Trak-loc for the rear. It also includes heavy duty cooling and a trans cooler.

I have found a 2000 that has the corporate 8.25 rear and Select-Trac fwd. What is the difference between Selec-trac and Command -Trac?? On the option sheet it says "DHP Select-Trac Full Time 4WD System". It only has 43000km and looks to be in really good shape. Of course I've only seen it at night in the dealer lot. It's selling for $17,995CDN. I plan on returning tomorrow and checking it out in the daylight. It seems to sit quite low and has the 225/75 R15 tires. I think I'd like to bump it up a bit because it looks like a car beside my CJ with 33's. If anyone can assist me with any specifics I should look for with these models, and whether this is a fair price or not, it would be greatly appreciated.

Selec-Trac is a "full-time" option that allows you to run the Jeep on all types of surfaces, dry or wet without damage. Command-Trac is for off-road use only on loose surfaces, dirt etc. I can't say if there is a real long term difference on reliability though....

The 225/75-15's were standard fare for the XJ. I have 30X9.5's on my XJ with Up-Country and they rubbed at full lock. A spacer on the steering stops put a end to that. The Up-Country option added one inch of lift but that doesn't really matter if you plan on lifting it anyway. To run

31" tires you need at least a 3" lift regardless of having Up-Country or not.

Can't say if the price is fair for you in Canada, last time I checked $17,995CDN was about $38.77 in US dollars :)

John, where do you live? I got a 2000 Sport last year for $14,000 but it did have 84,000km on it. I've seen a couple for sale in my area (Belleville, Ont.) I can forward some numbers if you aren't too far away.

I just took a Jeep out with Select -Trac and I couldn't figure out what the

4wd part-time setting was for. In 2wd the rear wheels spun, In 4WD part-time it did the same thing, and then in 4wd Full-Time, the 4wd actually engaged with no spin. So what does the Part-time option do? There is also some rust bubbling on the ends of the window belt mouldings which I thought was strange for a 2000 GC. The rear window wiper was inop also and the dealer said that was a "normal" problem. I originally was looking for a normal cherokee but this dealer had a GC limited for $22,000 and it has 60,000 km on it. I figured for the extra $5,000 I'd go for the 4.7l and Dana 44. It also has the tow package and sunroof as well as all the other interior appointments. Has anyone else seen these issues with the mouldings or the rear wiper before?

Thanks Mort,

I actually think I found one today. I'm bringing it to my mechanic tomorrow morning. It ended up not even being a cherokee that I chose, I spent an extra $5000 and went for a GC. It seems to be pretty nice and defenitely at the low end of the price scale compared to others I've seen. It only has

60,000km and is fully loaded with the 4.7l and dana 44. I figure its an okay price for $22,000. What really shocked me was that insurance on the Cherokee "Sport" was about $200 more a year than the GC Limited. I thought for sure it would be the other way around.

If I find something real bad with this Jeep tomorrow though I might still be in the hunt so thanks for the offer.

Part-Time is for off-road use only, such as dirt, mud & snow. Full-Time is just that, any surface, any time. It could be you didn't fully engage Part-Time or the transfer case needs adjustment. I know mine did about a year after I bought it... under warranty though for me.

Funny, I had the same problem with my rear wiper on my '98, also fixed under warranty. It may be "normal" but it still doesn't work.... will the dealer fix it?

On the Grand Cherokee or Cherokee (XJ) did you see these problems? Rust can go with any vehicle in wet/snowy climates. I live in Southern California so I don't know much about rust... as for the rear wiper the car is used... these things happen. The important part is the dealer going to fix it first?

I just hope Harris decides to : run for the PC's. : : Snow... : : Hey Snow, can't wait for Jean to be gone - if for nothing else, he's an embarrassment to our country. I think he's actually done a fair job and we're certainly in a better place than we would have been with C.R.A.P. (Canadian Reform Alliance Party)... if you recall that was their original name before somebody pointed it out. This would pave the way for future Stockwell Day off the cuff remarks. Remember the one about the Niagara river? I always though the water went down, not up the falls. That clown from Michigan must have sat in on that speech.

Mike Harris as PM hehehe... Let me sum it up:

1 blue dress shirt with the sleeves to short so he has to have them rolled up all the time - $17.99 3 ugly red ties - $45.00 1 surgical implant in his hand to prevent him from pointing his finger - $2500.00 The look on Daltons face if Mike Harris became PM - Priceless.

I really don't think Mike could beat Martin but it's the only shot the Tories, er Reform, er the Alliance... wait, it's coming to me... yes, it's the only shot the Canadian Conservative Party have. The right wing in this country has been so fractured by all the inbreeding and infighting and the public is scared shitless of the left wing... there has been no choice but to vote for a right(ish) leaning Liberal party. Ergo, consecutive landslides. I think Paul Martin can do it again versus anyone but Mike Harris.. I'm calling it a slight majority or large minority government for Paul Martin. I don't think Canadians are feeling the "time for change" on a federal level.

Just a little bitter... purely for selfish reasons. I export to the U.S. and while sales are still good, the conversion sucks 15% out of profit over last year this time. Time for a new DiefenDollar

Dem's will blame Rep's and Rep's will blame Dem's - I'm Canadian, I blame them both.

You guys were euchred in 2000; a moron with an agenda vs. a moron without a clue. Indy's don't stand a chance no matter how much they spend (re: Perot) - not that he was the right choice.

We would all benefit from an educated, high voter turnout from the local elections to federal - weed out some of the lame-ass career politicians. Engrained partisanship... "... because my Dad always voted ".
