Jeep model compatibility

Where would be a good place to look for parts compatibility? I have a

92 jeep cherokee laredo w 4.0 ltr inline 6 that has a blown engine and a cracked windshield. Also have access to a 87 jeep cherokee with 4.0 litre 6cyl and a good windshield. I'm wondering if these parts are easily interchangable or if I should keep looking for a newer jeep to scanvage parts from.

TIA

The 92 has (or had) the HO version of the engine while the 87 was the original version. The two used different heads, different computers, different intake and exhaust manifolds/headers and some different sensors in the FI. HO had quite a bit more power, mainly due to the head and manifiold improvements. The blocks are identical, so either would just drop in.

Since the computers are different, I would imagine that the real question would be whether the 92 head was OK or not. If the head looks to be OK, I would have it checked, do a valve job on it, possible have it milled to be sure it's flat, then swap that onto the

87 block so you could keep the intake and exhaust from the later HO setup. Of course, it you are that far you might as well consider rings and bearings for the block and...

At least, check the compression on the 87 before you start just to see if it needs attention.

As far as the first question goes, tho, yes it is a drop in exchange (until you try to get it running).

Hmm... more work than I wanted to do just to get her up and running right now. Probably just go with a straight swap from a salvage yard's 92 cherokee and rebuild the one that in there now while I wait for the swapped one to die.

Any idea if the body styles were enough the same that the windshield of an 87 would fit a 92? Might be able to salvage "something" from that old beast!

Thanks!!
