jk, boom or bust?

They can't make'em fast enough to meet the demand. If you want a 4 door Rubicon, you will be waiting several months, they're all sold before they come off the end of the factory line. The 2 doors aren't moving quite as fast but they're still selling every one they make within a week or two of the thing hitting the dealership. The JK is pretty much the only vehicle in the Jeep lineup that's selling worth doody right now, it's the best selling Wrangler in Jeep history, and the only one that is selling with no (zero) incentives.

I agree with this, my dealer has a several month long waiting list for ordered JK's. We're talking 2 to 3 month wait at least. Having had a TJ and now driving a JK, I don't think the size is that much of an issue. The JK looks a lot bigger but when you drive it the couple inches difference from the TJ is negligible. The JK also has more stock ground clearance than the TJ had with 16 inch standard wheels and 17 and 18 inch options. We like the JK as much or more as the TJ. Biggest sucky thing about it, the front passenger seat no longer flips all the way up to let back seaters in but we don't use the back much anyway.

There will probably never be another CJ/YJ/TJ-sized jeep. The JK was made larger in part for safety reasons (real or imagined, I don't know for sure). You will never see half doors again as a factory option for the same reason.

As far as wheelbase, goes, it's not that much longer--a extra 2 inches for the two-door. The total length is actually 2.5 inches shorter than the TJ. Wider is always better, too. I just wish it didn't look like a overgrown Samurai...

Just buy one, and see how you like it. This guy has more money than God, or a real long line of credit.

I have an old "shorty" Jeep and I really love it, but you'll never know about the JK unless you drive one.

Try the JK just for giggles and post a review here. The shorties are really too short. People kept asking for the Scrambler back and Jeep finally listened to them. You must have a line of credit long as your left arm from all the stuff you have bought over the years...

ill test drive one, but have no intention of buying one. its just to big for me.

Sounds like a job for a welder. I think you could handle the frame, but you might need some help with the body. If you get a soft top, an upholsterer. If you get a hard top, I'm not sure: custom fab, or chop and glue? I think I might test drive one too.

If you're serious about getting an early Rubicon, just look in Edmunds or something for a low mileage used one. From what I have seen, most of the early models were bought by old men who thought that money + options = value, irrespective of what the option actually did. They drove it up to Silverton, put it in four high, and took the gravel road to Animas Forks, just to say they had been off road. You shouldn't have any trouble finding one where the four wheel drive is barely broken in. Or get a stock TJ and beef it up with lockers and a lift kit. A place around here called RockWorx or something does that, but I guess this isn't it:

I was wondering about the technological gadgetry on the JK. Now that they've been out a year, how does do the electrically-activated lockers compare to the pneumatic ones on the TJ Rubicon? Have there been any issues with that fancy-schmancy traction control?

i am. i think im going with yellow this time. im guessing that was only for '03 and '04 (i couldnt order it in '05)?

im doing better. i still have the dodge cummins i bought in '05 with no intention of selling it. course, a lot of that has to do with how theyre over-complicating the new diesels.

Nice one in Albuquerque at Quality Jeep Chrysler, yellow 2004 with 37,346 miles, Autotrader dealer ID 57675621. Not much snow in the Southwest, and vehicles tend to be rust free there.
