Yup, that is VIN specific.

Have you tried unplugging and plugging back the CPS plug right at the rear top of the exhaust manifold? Those are known to cause no starts when they have a dirty connection.

There maybe some large fuses in the engine compartment on the right side. I remember seeing one fuse that blew causing a JGC not to start. Replaced fuse and it started. Not sure if the XJs are the same or not during the later years. ;-) Just a thought! later, dave AKA vwdoc1

My mechanical skill are almost nonexistant. But if it was a blown fuse wouldn't it not run at all? It would run for a couple of seconds if I could catch the on and off cycle just right. Then everything would shut off. Including all the gagues.

Unless the power was being fed by some other component, like the ign switch in the crank position. I have seen some fuses or terminals make contact sometimes. UGLY problem to find usually. I would prefer DEAD over sometimes dead! :-) Gauges shutting off indicate, to me at least, that power has stopped. Gotta find where that power is coming from and the Ign. Switch comes to mind.

At this point not much choice. I tried several other places and they have them on backorder also. I found one place that will refurb the existing one and a couple of places that sell used ones. Seems that not a lot of those are held in stock due to the high cost, their being very vehicle configuration specific, low failure rate and so on.

Well, the dealer got the part today. The problem is/was with chrysler. The only thing they got correct was that the dealer ordered the part when he said he did. After that everything chrysler told me and the dealer was wrong. Several times chrysler said the part had been shipped and it would be in in a couple of days. Each time the dealer contacted someone they work with at ups and ups said chrysler had not given them the part yet. At one point chyrsler said the part was in the same city as the dealer and should be at the dealer that day. Accroding to the dealer and ups chrysler had still not given the part to ups. On Monday the dealer tracked the part down. It was in Milwaukee and ups was going to overnight it. Chrysler at this point had no idea where the part was. According to the dealer this was a different distribution center than chrysler said it was being shipped from. Chrysler also promised to call me as soon as they found the part. As far as I know they are still looking for it.
