TJ side mirrors for doorless operation

Any suggestions on aftermarket side mirrors for the TJ when the door are off?

I'm looking for something that I can use all the time. So I don't want to use the mirror relocation brackets. I'd like something that I can put on once and it will work just as well with the doors on or off and the soft top on or off.

I'm thinking that these would work well:

If the url does not work, it's product #13111 02 from Quadratec.

Anyone have experience with these? Any thoughts or other suggestions are appreciated.

It will be getting warm soon and I want to make sure I'm prepared to go doorless.

Thanks in advance.

Relocates the mirror to the windshield hinge permanently, and reuses the factory mirror.

Unless, that is, you want "real" mirrors. :-)

Yes, but I have heard that it's difficult (if at all possible) to see out of the passenger mirror when the soft door uppers are on. So then when using the soft top, you have to move the mirrors back to the stock locations.

Can anyone verify this?

Of course I do! :-)

I mean, the difference in cost between the two options is around $6. So I just want to do my homework first to make sure that I'm happy with what I get. Even if the difference is $20, I'd want to spend it if it saves hassel down the road.

Basically, I want to be able to get something that allows me to be used with the doors off as well as with the doors and top on without having to switch mirrors or move things, etc.

So what are you other TJ owners using?

I put a new set similar to those on my CJ and they are very shaky from wind resistance and they move too easily. The wind at 60 mph pushes them down. If the original TJ mirrors are any better, I might stick with them.

Does anyone use the windshield brackets?

Yes, true... the passenger side mirror is hard to see when using the relocator brackets (with the doors on). That's why I only installed one on the driver's side, and left the other one untouched. Here in WA, we don't need to have a passenger's side mirror when the doors are off.

I went and bought some towing mirrors from Autozone and use a bolt to fasten them to the upper door hinge when I take the doors off. Everything I've heard about the mirror movers says the passenger side is difficult, if not impossible, to use with the movers and the doors on.

I've also been told that motorcycle mirrors will bolt right into the hinge, but haven't tried that one myself.

Steve Seppala from here uses cheap Honda motorcycle mirrors. The bolt right in the hinge hole, look good and are stable. It only takes him a couple minutes to put them on.

I think using Honda motorcycle mirrors as a bolt on is just an urban myth. :-) I went to the local Honda dealer in search of these mythical mirrors and came up with nothing. They were either too big, too small, too short, too long, and they were all too expensive.

But not being one to let something like that get in my way I bought a $10 generic replacement mirror and a .15 cent nut and bolt of the right size and welded them together. The end result . . . I wasted $10.15. The mirror is too small and too far away to be of any real use. Well, I guess the Highway Patrol can't pull me over for no outside mirror, but I still have to look over my shoulder before changing lanes.

They make mirror mounts that go on your windshield hinges. You can find them an any Jeep catalog.

Your problem was that you tryed using Honda mirrors. :-)

A set of Harley mirrors works just fine for me. Yes, they're a mite small, but they're stable, and they vibrate less than they did when they were on the bike. I have no problem seeing out of them, and they were cheap, because I had them laying around the shop already. Anyway, they beat no mirrors at all and will satisfy the long arm of the law. If you don't trust them, keep your head on a swivel, it's pretty easy to turn your head before you change lanes or whatever.

I got a set of mounts off ebay made for the TJ, and a set of "real jeep" mirrors for them. Works great, I leave my TJ mirrors on the doors and just one nut puts the CJ mirrors on the jeep when I go doorless.
