It's a "part time" system. So you only want to use 2H on hard surfaces. 4H and 4L are for offroad/dirt/gravel only and will damage the xfr case if you run it on hard surfaces.

Would and NP231 be what I have in my 93 Cherokee?

I wish I had full time 4x4. I do have the 231.

I have the 242 and I LOVE it.
