Does the transfer case use gear oil or transmission fluid?

Automatic transmission fluid. Dexron II, or its current equivalent.

Actually, there is no specific type of ATF need for a chain-driven transfer case like the Cherokee and Wrangler uses. ANY good quality ATF works as well as any other good quality ATF. Really. It's auto trannys that are real particular about the kind of ATF they're fed. :)
