That's the problem with all the smog crap. If it isn't working right, then folks fiddle to make them run. Sure they run, but.....
Getting the idle mix to 'best lean' does them wonders, but everything has to be working to get there.

I wasn't arguing that diesels are cleaner or better for the environment, just that "stinky" is subjective.
There ya go, I haven't had the opportunity to be a professional diesel driver myself. Maybe if I had I wouldn't feel that gasoline-powered vehicles without modern emissions controls can be just as "stinky" as the average diesel??

I was wondering that too.
Then try running a leaner idle mix maybe and see what it smells like?
I have to bump up the idle speed while leaning it to keep it running. Something like a long six is supposed to have a bit of a rumble in it for best lean. If you make it purr, it will be too rich and it will stink.

You are messing with the idle mix jets only. This affects anything under about 1500 rpm, from there up, the main jets take over.
The idle mix jets are the important ones for off road though.
It also is pretty hard to get her too lean, you would have to have the idle speed up over 1200 rpm.
The leanest you can get it while keeping a fairly stable 700 rpm or whatever idle is called for is the way to go. I keep turning and turning, a little lean, give it a shot of gas, a little more on the rpm screw, give it a shot of gas, a little leaner, etc., etc.

My brother's '70 Torino (which I also drove through high school) had no smog equipment that I can remember, just a vacuum advance on the distributor...
