Id love to own a Jeep Wrangler again but with gas prices the way they are the Jeeps don't get such good mileage
Why cant they make a Jeep using a diesel engine? Or even a hybrid model?

you are never going to get great mileage out of a Wrangler regardless of what engine you put in it, for obvious reasons.

They can. the better question would be, why don't they? The answer to that one is, they do. The better question would be, why don't they deliver them in the US market?

It has the aerodynamics of a brick and two full axles.
They are heavier than they look too.
Basically the 6 and 4 get the same mileage, so would a diesel.
Diesel also is way too stinky to have in a convertible Jeep.

I must disagree here. I know you and Bill are anti diesels but many people disagree.
I've owned better then a dozen vw diesels from the first stinky rabbits to almost the newest tdi's (we got a common rail in late 2004) that are very clean. Anyhow my actual mileage on like cars with gas and diesels is about
35% more for diesels or more. My current 99.5 jetta tdi has averaged very close to 50 mpg for over a hundred thousand miles. Same type of driving for similar gasoline car was a tad under thirty. Plus I'm currently running 20% soybean oil and the exhaust smells like french fries! A VW tdi 2.5L 5 cylinder would be perfect in my XJ!Joe R.
99.5 jetta tdi 96 XJ with Banks header!I like diesels, but a 2.5 wouldn't nearly be powerful enough for your XJ. A 4.0 diesel would bring a smile to your face though.

I am in Canada with the highest in the world I believe sulfur content in our diesel fuel. The crap stinks! Getting boxed behind a bus on the way home or worse into work with the top down can just plain wreck your day....
Sorry, but no way would I follow a diesel Jeep on the trail. I have no problem if he is behind me.....

that's pretty well my point. The US and Canada have s***ty fuel and, because diesels are less popular, less advanced diesels. I don't like the older diesels either.

What sort of mileage are you looking for? I had a four cylinder CJ-7 with a four speed that got 23-24 MPG at 55 MPH. Of course, if I drove 65, I got about 13 MPG. The new ones are probably at least as efficient as long as you SLOW DOWN!
