What about an XJ Cherokee?

I think the XJ Cherokee is too big for me to get around in the woods and narrow places. I'm not sure how big the Cherokee is, but I'd be surprised if I could get one into the barn-slot.

I'd buy something like a John Deere Gator, but I can't run that on the road, for as far as I have to drive. They can't be made street legal, in other words.

I wish I could get that old Land Rover that I drove in S. Africa. Notta chance. That style of Land Rover can't be bought here.

You would be looking at a newer than 91-92 YJ Wrangler then. That is when they changed from a carb to injection. The carb engine is nice, but it takes a kit every couple years and some odd fiddling now and then....

I always recommend an unmodified vehicle. Usually folks drive a vehicle to the limits of the modification, so that means a lot of extra wear.

The older CJ7's are nice and have a fold down tailgate. (YJ's have a door tailgate.) They sit a couple inches taller than the YJ for clearance too. Sometimes you can find one of those still stock. Carb engine again though.

I actually prefer the carb engine because you can usually make it run. It will even take a gravity fuel feed to get out of the bush if the pump or a line dies...

Ya know..... this all means the Cherokee is smaller and substantially lighter than the Wrangler Unlimited

I don't know, but one of the first things I noticed about my YJ, after buying it and installing chrome mirrors that is, was how it would fit right in the parking spaces in the Microsoft parking garage. I could drive under Building 3, and do a K-turn if there weren't any available spaces. Even the rice burners couldn't do that.

He wants to put 300 pounds of feed in the back. I am not too sure about that. I put over three hundred pounds of conrete mix in mine once, but I only drove it around the corner. It kind of depends on how far the feed store is.

I'm thinking that a XJ Cherokee might really be what he needs.

There is a good amount of storage with the seats up and much more with the back seat down. It will be more comfortable to drive and probably get better mileage.

All the later years used galvanized steel for the bodies so rust should not be an issue

Off-Road the XJs were certainly capable

The problem there is he specifically doesn't want a pick'um up truck.

The first thing I noticed when the missus bought our '95 ZJ is that it was shorter than most rice grinder sedans, and not that much longer than my 1985 RX7 [ just over 7 inches longer].
