Looks like I MIGHT be buying a 101 GS pretty soon, however it's a long way away and it ain't road worthy (no MOT/tax)

Any of you 101-ers got any top tips for how to transport one? Will it fit on a MEGA-TRAILER or is it gonna be flat-bed time?

you need a trailer that'll take the weight, it's near enough maximum weight tow for a land rover, and unless the trailer's not very heavy, it can go over the 3.5T limit for over-run brakes.

depending on what it needs to be legal/running, it might be cheaper to get it MOTed where it is and drive it back, having made sure that the AA/RAC or whatever will recover it if it breaks.

Ifor Williams do make a trailer long enough for a 101 rated at 3500Kg MGW that weighs about 700Kg, which leaves 2800Kg for the load. Plenty. So if you could find somewhere with one of those for hire you could tow it behind a "normal" Land Rover.

I had to get my 101 ambi moved when i bought it a couple of months ago. You could read my thread which was in this group entitiled 'vehicle movers'

I had trouble as the ambi is too heavy for pretty much any trailer i could find, and most companies said it was too big/heavy for them to move on a trailer. flatbed people quoted me from £300 (this was for ~120 miles). You might have more luck as the GS is lighter.

. He couldnt move it himself, but knew aman who could for a sensible amount of money. My 101 got shifted when he was coming back from delivering somethingelse and had an empty truck, I had to wait a month or so, but thatgave me time to butter up the owners of the garden i was parking it in:)

Whereabouts do you need yours shifting from/to? I now know someone in Stoke who has a trailer who might be able to do it. I'll have to check what his trailer is rated for. I think a 101GS probably weighs about

2300Kg's (someone feel free to correct me!)

I had my ambi weighed on a weighbridge and it came in at 2900ish

Thanks for all the advice.

Unfortunately it turns out the GS was sold at the weekend :-( Never mind, I'll remember for next time.

For the record.... towing shouldn't be a problem as I have access to a RR with a 4l Perkins in it.

I also know an old mate of my dads who has a "for private use only" recovery truck.

No but the local dentist is short of a couple of bottles of helium and Tims tyres look a little on the overinflated side ;-)

Whilst the engine may be up to it the problem will be the maximum permissable gross weight of the lot. In the case of the RR should be 3.5 tons. (But I may be wrong - it happens!)

Nick Kay has a triple axel trailer he hires out , a GS would be ok on this behind a Rangie and I've seen Morph on it but I reckon it would have been technically overweight for a Disco to pull, fortunately I haggled delivery in the sale, something you should bear in mind whilst striking a deal when you get to that stage where you've both haggled halfway and it's nearly shakey hand time.
