110 Defender 2.5TD alternator

This is a 1990 110 Defender with a 2.5TD engine

Through the winter my alternator appears to have been struggling to keep up. If you have headlights and blower fan on, the needle drops below the middle position (which I assume means its not quite keeping up with the discharge). If you add the heated rear window as well, it's even lower.

I therefore wonder what the normal size of alternator should be and, alternatively, looking at the spotlights I want to fit! what's the largest alternator I can fit without needing any modifications?

Cheers

If it's standard it should keep up ok. What voltage are you getting across the battery once the engine is warm and ticking over?

If it's not around 14 volts then consider cleaning up the earth straps on the block first before anything else. Could just be a cruddy earth. The usual trick of bunging a jump lead from the engine hoist mounts to the earth on the battery should show this pretty quickly, clean up the engine hoist point first for a good connection and once connected check the voltage again at tickover. If it's come up then new earth leads / good clean up are the way forward.
