110 fuel filler leak

Hi everyone, On my 1986 110 diesel, the fuel filler cap (old metal type) does not seem to seal well, meaning that if the tank is 3/4 or more full it spills out in quite large quantities whenever I go around a corner. Around here the roads are just a series of corners with few straights so I must make a right mess. I really don't want to do this due to pollution and for motorcyclists etc. never mind the cost of wasted fuel. I have renewed the rubber seal recently, but that didn't help. I was thinking about making some baffle in the down tube, or simply stuff a sponge of some kind down it, so that it doesn't completely seal it, but maybe would help to stop the sloshing about.

Anyone manage to fix this problem? Thanks alot, Andrew

Given that it's not supposed to do it without any baffles, I'd suspect that the cap's not making contact with the filler neck, new seal or not, can you check it somehow to see if the cap is sealing, or there's a hole in the cap itself?

Basically the cap is supposed to make an airtight seal, failure to do so is an MOT fail, so there's sommat up that's going to bite you at some point so best find out what it is.

There's something wrong! You shouldn't need to be thinking about modifications.

Other than the main seal there should be a non-return valve in the cap to prevent fuel escape when the vehicle is on its side. Is the valve present and working?

Are you sure that the fuel is escaping from the cap? The breather pipe on the neck hasn't become disconnected etc., Has it?

Gee, thanks for the quick replies! I always thought that a total seal would give problems as the fuel level drops, but maybe not.

I will check the neck of the filler to ensure it is in proper contact with the seal etc.

The cap has 2 tiny holes in it (on the outside) on the inside it has a small tube with 2 or 3 small brass "things" inside which I guess is the non-return valve. I'll check this, also the breather.

Thanks again, Andrew

answering myself here, but looking at the parts book I'm even more confused, according to my VIN I should have one of the "modern looking" caps (eg RTC4740), but mine now is the metal type with "thin" handle and 3 locating clips on the cap, so is part 277260. I'm fairly certain this is the original.

How do the newer type fit to the neck? with lugs like the old, or slots like most modern cars.

Part 277260 is =A32.60 for non genuine, so I will buy a new one.

I've change from V8 petrol to diesel, I assume the caps would be the same? I notice in the parts book you can get vented and non-vented versions.
