110 V8, 30 yards and it stops???

Landy 110 v8 with solex carbs, new fuel tank, filter, electric pump, cleaned carbs, new diaphragms, new coil, points, condensor.

Heres the problem, starts up fine, goes 30 yards and dies, wait, startup again runs really badly (enough to get back) leave half hour and the same all over again.

Replaced everything I can think of, fuel is pouring out the fuel pipe when removed and the pump is pumping continuously. Will run forever on tickover and high revs providing you dont move but once it starts playing up keeps dying.

Oh and have tried with fuel cap removed.

Any advice appreciated???

What happens if you start it up and rev it without going anywhere?

distributor cap possibly . if you have changed it and still have old one , scrape the contacts inside the old cap to get rid of the crud, reinstall and try running it .

i had loads of problems with dizzy caps, they never really need changing , all they need is the crust scraping off the electrodes inside once in a while and theyll last for years .

if points ignition then its most likely the condenser and points , even new points can fail as quick as they are put in .

.most new points are laquered , you need to clean off contacts with thinners before installation .

remember that there is a plastic insulator under the points , check this .

check that distributor doesnt move and check you have correct timing advance/retard and dwell angle .

If I start it up and dont go anywhere it is usually fine, I have checked and cleaned the carbs 3 times and replaced points and condensor, timing has not changed so it cant be that. Only thing that seems constant is leave it and it will be ok again??

Electrical maybe, can a dissy cap cause this i wonder?

Turned out to be the igition coil.

Fuel pump. As soon as you load it, it pulls the bottom filter up and it stays there. Release the pressure, it drops back, problem gone. BTDT.

This will sound daft, are you saying if i remove the bottom filter in the pump all will be well? surely the filter allows fuel to pass.

I had this problem with a new fuel pump. It would idle pefectly, but would not move 300 yards off the drive. Replaced fuel pump and *bingo*. There is some sort of system in the fuel pump (facet) that causes a problem if it is faulty.....

I think this is the fuel system engine breather. This is two sets of thin pipes and valves near the top of the block. If you look v. closely you may find they are rusted through. I replaced the lot for £276 in 1997 and it has been trouble free ever since. E.mail me if you want the parts details
