It could, of course, only start playing up the day before Christmas Eve, with much family ferrying scheduled for the next few days! Came home today, parked Disco in driveway blocking exit for other car, dropped off shopping, went back to Disco, pushed button on key fob and ... nothing. Opened door with key to retrieve handbook, alarm goes off, lights flash etc. Much muttering of four letter words. Think must be dead or tired battery in key fob, so try spare key. Doesn't work either. More muttering (louder) of four letter words. Try inserting key code manually, give up after six tries, all rejected by car, and major sense of humour failure. Enlist help of neighbour to push Disco out of way, then try button on key fob one last time.. and, of course, it responds, doors unlock, car will start. Neighbour wanders off, shaking his head. Decide must definitely be weak batteries in key fobs. Take other car to shop, buy new battery for key fob, replace battery, aim at car and... yep... dead as the proverbial doornail! Try holding key fob at different angles / distances and pushing button. Nine times out of ten, no response, but occasionally car will unlock (but then will not remote lock). I now suspect that the sensor in the car (whatever/wherever that is) is failing or has an intermittent fault. Anyone any ideas as to (a) cause and (b) solution of problem?

this is not a wind-up, for some reason I don't understand the putting the remote against your head makes it work at longer range than normal. Might or might not help your problem, though.
Mine works about twice as far away if I stick it in my ear and open my mouth, it's summat to do wiv the shape of the empty cranium amplifying the signal, you're not wrong Austin. :-)

Simon, The very same happened to mine yesterday at 3-30pm which is exactly same model as yours + same year though gassed. (Factory built in cliches?). You could not have described what happened to me better !
I was outside Sainsbury's and used their shop for a new fob battery CR2032 .... it didn't work.
Same happened 6 months ago in a remote part of Wales. I hot wired it. then. Not knowing the cause and continuing to find out more about it, I installed a press button switch to save lifting bonnet and fiddling each time to start it. I left that switch installed which was very handy yesterday.
I have to say that my first attempt was with alarm still in circuit. When I disconnected the vehicle battery (it needed replacing) my ears were damaged by the alarm as I stayed close, trying my best to stop the alarm disturbing others. Ears still not recovered !
On removing cables to alarm, I disconnected the battery. I was amazed to find, on re-connecting the battery, everything set back to normal with fob working perfect until yesterday. (it might work for you ! )
From yesterday's episode, I'm still using the switched hot wire, I don't know yet if a battery remove and reconnection will work a second time.
Later today when running about is finished, I'll try it ... with fingers crossed and I will make sure the alarm is disconnected first ! ! !
