2nd hand Landrover issues

Hi



Having had a Series III in the past, and being at the point of selling the family espace, I've put 'Defender' on my shopping list (and it's top of the wife's list)



On my budget I'm looking at 2nd hand. Two that I've seen have done



120,000 miles and 60,000 miles. I'm probably looking for diesel.

Are there any particular issues re services or faults which develop at these mileages? I'm aware of issues like chasis rot, having had to replace the chasis on my series III. What I want to try and avoid is getting one which is just entering a period when it's going to need to get a lot of things replaced.



Also, what's the fuel economy on the Defenders: standard petrol and Td1? (iirc I used to get about 18mpg from my series III)

I bought an ex AA 110 with 140,000 on the clock. It's been well maintained for it whole life but is suffering a bit from electrolytic corrosion in places. Apparently if they have been regularly serviced they will go on for ever. I asked here before buying mine and had a few people reply that they had seen upto and above 200,000 out of a TDi with no major work.

As for economy, I get around 25mpg. Mostly commuting to/from work on a 22 mile round trip with some laning at weekends.

206,000 now - still no problems!
28-30 out of mine (200Tdi), and that's being merciless with it.

you really do have to hammer it at speed to return much less than that. And I'm talking 85-90 when I say speed. Took our disco up the M6 at those sorts of speeds, and it used a bit more fuel than normal.

90-95 usually - don't forget that Defenders are generaly rather more thirsty than Discos

So far so good. Can anyone recommend web sites re 2nd hand Landrovers? All I can find is trade sites. Being a little out of date, and having owned SIII before, I want to gen up on Defenders, eg 200TDi and 300 TDi?

And when they say 'Excellent chassis and bulkhead,' for the ex-mod vehicles does that prove to be the case on close inspection in your experience?

Yep, it certainly did with mine, not even the slightest of rust .Which was quite amazing going by the amount of sand I found in the back of it. Not to mention the 3 bullets,and a few other army things. :o) GGJ
