300 TDI Fuel cut off Solenoid valve

It's far too dark and cold to go and check on mine, but there are two spanner sizes between 23mm and 24mm

or 15/16" A/F is 23.81mm

but both seem a bit unlikely on a Bosch pump.

Isn't there a BSP size in there somewhere?

Interesting! - Is there a chart anywhere that would list all these sizes. It may just be worth printing and hanging on the garage wall.

There is. I CBA to look for it now, but ISTR I found it while reading about different spanner sizes in Wikipedia [1] - there's a link in there to a site with a very comprehensive chart.

HBOL used to have a thing in it.

I think a 15/16 metrinch spanner will fit all of those, at least the ring end but probably open end also. They do have a problem in that they have a lot of free play so are not useful if the swing is limited.

Metrinch spanners are an abomination and should all be melted down and recycled into something useful.

Why? They're effectively hex wall drive spanners which don't round off difficult nuts like bi-hex rings do and are particularly effective on soft nuts. I actually bought my 15/16 one to undo the oil cooler hose on the 101 which all other spanners had failed to do.

'Tis similar in format to the one that Alex found but does cover the older stuff better, I think.

BSP spanners use the same across flat sizes as BSF/BSW(Whit). The nominal BSP and BSF/BSW thread diameters for the same 'size' are, of course, totally different. Just remember also that there are two versions of BSW i.e. same bolt diameter two different hex. across flat dimensions.

There are fasteners around that have heads that do not match the more usual standards e.g. M10 threads with 16 mm heads (usual is 17), M12 threads with 18 mm heads (usual is 19).

At the end of the day find something that fits snugly and don't get too overheated about it being the 'wrong' size. That way you'll avoid issues with corroded hexagons - something that we know all too well about!

in terms of sockets, there's actually nothing to beat single hex IMHO in the correct size. Ring spanners are a bit more tricky, single hex would make their usefulness limited.

Hi all!.

Thanks for all the information, I still have not got the solenoid valve off! I currently have a 24mm open ended spanner on it at the moment. The ring end has a 'Tourniquet' attached to the steering column which should be putting more 'Torque' onto the valve that I can possibly manually do and it still refuses to budge! Just letting the Spanish equivalent of penetrating oil to do its work.

I may have to spend a day getting the injector pump out and back in just to get the ruddy thing off and find out what is wrong.

The image I get when reading your description shows the solenoid being tightened. Are you sure you're actually undoing it?

Yes it is anticlockwise, I thought the thread may be even left handed by nah. It is a right hand drive one just in case you were thinking it was left handed.
