Sticking Fuel Cut off Solenoid - ZX Diesel

The fuel cut off solenoid is sticking on my ZX diesel, especially when the engine is hot. I've checked this by taking one of the injector pipes off and cranking the engine over - nothing comes out. Pouring cold water over the solenoid cools it enough for the engine to start again. If I run the car with a lot of injector cleaner in the fuel, the problem is not as bad - I don't know why, I always thought it was snake oil, but it seems to help.

The solenoid (bosch pump) is a £70 + vat dealer only part. As the car only cost £160, I really don't want to spend that on a solenoid if I can help it. Is the solenoid something I can remove and clean, or is it a replace only part? I thought about removing it and using carb cleaner to get out any crud..

Only real cure is to replace it. Find your local diesel injection service agent, as they should be able to supply a new one for a fraction of the cost of a dealer.

If you are on the south coast, try Automarine of Brighton. They also do rebuilds.

Or try ebay for a used item for a fraction of the cost and buy another as a spare just incase as its not a big job to do and the money saved can go towards more sunflower oil ;o)

If you unscrew the solonoid, and recover the spring and plunger, then replace the solonoid, it'll run.

Stopping the engine requires stalling it in gear. Would be ok apart from possible danger of not being able to turn off if in the event of an accdient though...

Thanks for all the replies chaps. I'll ring round a few diesel places tomorrow and see what I can find.

Or alternatively operate the stop lever on the pump. See your Hayne BOL for the location of the item on the Bosch pump - on the Lucas pump it's on the top left hand side, marked STOP.
