300TDI Charge light on and no tacho

Sep 13, 2003 8 Replies

Suddenly happened today.... no tacho and charge light on unless disco revved up (I'd guess to over 3000rpm by the sound) when charge light goes out but tacho still says zero revs. Will need to sort this tomorrow. Any one got any hints???? Please!!!!!

Sepentine belt still on and alternator turning. Water temp normal and sump oil ok. Suspected belt slip (have had lots of this before cured usually with talk! (smells nice and stops the squeeling) ) but I've eliminated that.

Fear its an engine management module job.... and another big bill at the main dealers for a module that in the old days replaced a few simple relays and fuses. Oh for a Morris 1000 engine management system on a Land Rover!

Any thoughts or pointers?

Having just read a post above... I have been towing a hired Trailer today........... could it be the towing electrics... warning light goes out when ignition turned off.

Check the alternator? I cannot comment on a 300TDi but my RR takes the tacho reading off the back of the alternator. If the alternator is sh*gged then I would have (1) no tacho (2) charge light would come on.

Maybe this is your problem?

Graeme

I know it's not the same vehicle, but I just read this by coincidence...

"At about 100,000 miles many Range Rovers experience alternator problems. Symptoms include tachometer failure, the ignition light coming on when it shouldn't, and even engine misfiring, stumbling and cutting out, or weird transmission shifting."

Sorry guys. Both cases point to diodes gone in the alternator.

The tacho is fed from the alternator and the tacho will not do anything, or may bounce about, up until around 3000 revs. Seen it on my mates V8 disco on holiday earlier this year.

The charging light staying on is a sign the diodes are allowing voltage back to the warning light. Seen it on a Montego.

When similar symptoms had appeared on my 1993 model year Discovery 200Tdi it turned out it was a faulty voltage regulator of the alternator.

Take care Pantelis

I had this on my 300Tdi some time ago - turned out to be the diodes in the voltage regulator fitted to the back of the alternator. Can be changed without removing the alternator if you have sufficiently nimble hands and supple wrist. I didn't ... but I know a man that did ;-)

Mandy comes in useful for this stuff occasionally. With blood running down my arm and no expletives left to test, I gave up and asked Mandy to refit the bottom coolant hose on the Disco. 2 minutes later it was fitted and she was looking at me like I was some kind of cretin!

On or around Sat, 13 Sep 2003 21:00:31 +0100, "Graeme" enlightened us thusly:

300 TDi gets it's tacho signal from the alternator too. the combination of a no-charge light and no tacho is a bit of a give-away - if the alternator's spinning, then it's probably buggered.
