what motor? most of them don't have an engine ECU. I think it was only the late-model autos that got EDC.

Only the tacho, it uses an a/c pulse direct from one of the windings as a reference but it wouldn't be accurate enough for anything in the engine management department I would have thought.

they're not. I replaced the alternator on our (now ex-) TDi with the same model alternator, same pulley (admittedly not a genuine part) and the rev counter thereafter read about 25% high.
