300TDi or TD5 ???

What shall I spend my loan on? I desire a 90 CSW and have 10-12k to spend. Whats better a late 300 or an early TD5? In your honest opion, give us a clue, Cheers. Davey.

Believe it or not the Td5 is not the devil incarnate! People will always say

300 Tdi because of the lack of electronics. You should seriously consider the Td5, as long as you get one that has had the flywheel and injector harness modifications done.... However, it is definitely worth taking both for a test drive, as you may never get on with the electronic throttle on the Td5.

The Td5s are fine to work on at home on a DIY basis, they have long service intervals (12k miles between intermediate services, 36k between major) and as long as you don't have ECU problems (most should be sorted out by now but check the history to make sure) it should be trouble free.

The 300 Tdi is also a great engine (make sure it's had the cambelt mod done), proven worldwide and used by the MoD and exported in new Defenders. The choice between Td5 and Tdi basically boils down to a choice between electronics and not :o)

Go and look at both and do some test drives. Martin

Usual story when buying Land Rovers - buy whatever LR you find that is the best condition/deal whatever engine it has.

Depends on use, if you intend going to unsophisticated places ie remote africa, europe etc. stick to KISS .... keep it simple stupid .... Ask south african drivers with Td5's who have had to limp back fom the bush. In the old days it was ... find the local smith and bash it with a hammer, now it's find the new module and plug it in. Not many tin shack shops have an electronics counter behind the Coke bottles.

Td5's OK on the school run but if you depend on it see what the aussies and africans drive in the bush

Makes me wonder exactly what the aussies and africans do actually drive in the bush as all modern Toyotas, Nissans and Isuzus et al have engines with a similarly high level of engine technology as the TD5 and are similarly unrepairable in the bush. Perhaps they have decided it's just too risky nowadays so they all walk! The only bit of Africa i have much knowledge of is Kenya and Defender 300TDi's seem to be most popular there for bush work, though in the sahara and north africa they sorely miss their peugeot 504 saloons. . . . . ;-)

Me too! Great trucks! Apparently all the heavy machinery to make them went to China.

Not sure about the wiring harness issue but IIRC there was a problem with early td5 flywheels cracking.....

See my Td5 KB article at

for more info about the injector harness problems.

The problem has even manifested itself in my conversion, but I've rectified it for now by removing the binding tape from the harness just before the ECU plug to allow the oil to drain into the battery box....

Martin,

This problem is more widespread that the TSB indicates, as I have recently seen 2 'W' reg Discos with this problem and they are outside of the VIN range.

Hi Mark

Well the only information I can go on at the minute is that provided by LR in the TSB, do you have any more information about the likely range of VIN numbers (e.g. the approx number of the vehicles you've seen)?

Many thanks,

Martin

If you buy a Td5 then make sure it has ABS, because then you also have traction control and that makes the world of difference off road and on road for that matter, but like the others say check for the flywheel mod and the injector loom.
