300tdi power steering pulley

My Discovery has just shredded the serpentine belt for the 2nd time in about

6 months. The belts don't snap initially - they split in 2 first - I managed to drive home on the shoelace that was left.

Fitted a new belt and saw what the problem was. The steering pump pulley is out of line - too far forward so the belt runs over the pulley flange. Pulley is good 1/2" out. There is no wobble or free play and the bolts are tight. It looks like the pulley is too far out on the shaft of the pump - either it's always been like that or it has worked forward.

Is this a know fault and how do I fix it?

Help....

yes a known issue and one which should have been rectified by the dealers IMO but sadly has been ignored doing nothing for the reputation of the company see

dunno. never noticed it on ours. could be the pump or its pulley are fitted wrong on yours - pump flange on the wrong side of mounting brackets might do that, if that's something that can happen on those. I've not got one to look at any more.

Mate who knows the tdi300 said it looks like the pulley is just too far forward - you can see the shiny shaft through the gap. As the pulley is still firmly attached I can only assume the shaft has come out of the pump a bit.

It MAY have been like that from new though. The vehicle was very low mileage when I bought it and the original owner had it serviced every 4,000 miles because that was all he would do in a year. If they changed the belts every service then the problem wouldn't have shown up.

You'd rather hope they would spot 1/2" of misalignment though!

I had this happen on my TDi. It would chew a belt up with in a day or two, looked at the pulley on the pump and i could see the shiny part of the shaft. I just changed the pump and it wsa okay.

This does seem to be an occasional failure in the pump.

Pump is working fine so far!!! Is it possible to fix this before the shaft comes right out?

bugger I pulled out the wrong link teach me to read it through first. Yes I understand there was an issue with one of the pulleys fitted ( tensioner is usually blamed) being slightly offset ( remember I have a 200TDi which has no problems - yeh right ) the cure is here

or replace the pulley maybe? . 1/2" seems excessive seems like LR was using monkeys to build 300tdi's or at least to do the Quality Control .maybe I'm wrong and its a replacement pulley fitted later coincidences do happen
