300Tdi RPM in 96 Disco auto

Hi All

I have recently got my mits upon teh above, however it seems to have an aftermarket alt fitted and I am sure the rev counter is under reading. Any idea what rpm i should be doing at say 80km/h, 100km/h and 120km/h.

Also I have a most annoying rattle coming from the dash area but I am loath to start pulling it to pieces without some sort of WS mannual. Any ideas which one are good. I assume that the Haynes is all but useless.

My best guess is that the speedo is over reading, they all do, the amount varies, get a GPS to acurately measure the speed, you might find that the revs are right. My 96 TDi auto ticks over at 750 ish and changes up on kick down at 3750, The speedo is about 4MPH out at 30 and 7 at 80.

Best advice is turn the radio up!!! its the path of least inconveniece.

Good luck

Peter.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tested the disco with GPS and I thought it was pretty good. About 3% overreading which is better than most.

Still not too sure about the true rpm at speed and since the car is otherwise so quite, I am keen to eliminate the irksome rattles.
