95 Range Rover, beeping on shift to low

Hi,

We've just bought a '95 Range Rover. On trying to shift into low range, the car gives a constant beeping.

If I try to select a gear a "SELECT NEUTRAL" message comes up and it certainly doesn't feel as though it's changed into low.

Everything is fine in high range, no funny noises and changes fine.

I can't find anything about this in the manual, or anywhere via Google.

Does anyone know what this means - other than Low range not working ;)

Other problems we've found:

Climate control doesn't work - just a whisper of air, although it does seem cool. The "book" symbol comes up.

Front light wipers don't seem to work.

Perhaps you are trying to rush it. It isn't like a normal hi-lo lever, the change is managed electronically. Move it to neutral, wait a few seconds (ISTR there was a bit of a quiet clunk when it shifted to neutral) then move to low range. If that won't work, move back to neutral, count to 5 and try again. This may not be your problem, but I thought the same as you when I first tried to get the P38 into low box. HTH.

Are you moving trying to do this? If so, it tells you to select N.

Hi, thanks to both for the prompt replies!

This is stood still and I've tried waiting a minute or so. There's no clunk either.

I take it there's no physical link between the gearstick and the boxes? On our Cherokee, sometimes it gets itself in a tizzy and you have to engage gears and roll forward/back - or sometimes just pull real hard!

Souns like the soleniod/actuator is not working, check 12vdc to it when trying to engage, it's on the transfer box, looks like a starter motor.

Nige uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Jees! This is all getting very very complicated now.... time to worry I guess is when It's chanting "PULL UP! PULL UP!" with a claxon in the background.

....sloaps off to check out the 110 - 200 and 300tdis on eblag.....

Thanks.

My guess, is that low range hasn't been used on this since new.

I wonder might it be possible for something to be literally stuck?

Could it be something as simple as the fuse going?

From the later posts, you are giving it enough time, so it sounds like the motor has seized/failed or there is a wiring fault.

Sounds be any number of things

They should come on every second wash of the windscreen, IIRC. If not, there is a relay for them, which would be the first thing to check.

I didn't realise all of this about the headlights - thanks for the tips!

Does anyone have any idea what the worst case scenario would be for the low range problem - if I had it done at a local specialist garage (i.e. *not* a dealer!).

It is very simple to test the actuator matey, get an assistant to put it into low box whilst you lay under the car with a voltmeter accros the very easy to get at terminals. If no voltage it could be a relay etc, if voltage there, the thing is either stuck fast or shagged!! Before you do anything, test this.

Presumably you can test the actuator by supplying 12V to it if the system isn't?

Levers are the thing...

Thanks all again for the help.

I left it standing for a day, came back to it and guess what?

It worked! First time - just a slight delay (less than 10 seconds).

My guess, is that something was stuck as it had never been used and the messing about or something freed it.

I'm well chuffed now - the headlight washers work fine too - just the climate control to sort!

Symptoms matey? I fixed just about everything there is to fix on one of those!!!

When you first turn the engine on, you get a bit of air through. If it's hot outside, this feels cool.

After maybe 1 minute, the little book symbol comes up on the climate control panel. Even if you try manually setting the fan to high, no more than a faint whisper of air comes through.

I thought at first it might be blocked, but I can't see any leaves in the intake below the windscreen. I've checked all the fuses and that's about the limit of my knowledge!

You need to get it checked over by Rovacom, plenty of places with it. They will charge you around £25 for a report. It could be many things.

Probably a duff motor or various sensors etc.
