Beware the 'easy job'...

And garages who say 'No problem, we can do that. Would you like to wait or leave it with us?'

You may remember me posting almost two weeks ago about how to go about removing a rusted on drive flange so I could get at the front wheel bearings on my 110. The flange was completeley rusted up and was going nowhere so I approached a local Landy garage to see what they thought.

No problem, stroll in the park. Bring it in and we'll do it for you he said. It ended up with disks, pads and calipers being needed due to bad corrosion on disks and caliper pistons. So I've ended replacing the N/S CV as it had to be cut up to remove the flange, stub axle, bearings both sides, disks, pads, calipers and of course the drive flange.

I've no problem with the fact it needed so many new bits, you shouldn't skimp on brakes and they would have needed doing some time in the future anyway. So, how long does it take to do this work then? How about 9 bloody days!!!! The garage in question don't seem in any hurry to complete jobs and do them at their leisure.

So if you're in Herts and are tempted to take your Landy to MRH in Hertford, think again and if you do take it there make sure you don't need it back in a hurry. Also take what the Manager says about timescales with a pinch of salt.

Thanks for listening, rant over.

Had something similar on the Discovery a couple of years ago. Funny noise going round corners when turning left, clunk one day and the caliper is hanging off. Took it into local garage up the road, but as the owner had recently started another garage up the other side of Leicester, had left an appointed person in charge. Two weeks later(after Bruce phoned up and lost his temper) he finally gets round to doing the job on the car after getting us to order new discs for rear, brake pads and a rear caliper for the left hand side. We know the job was started at about 10am as we had a phone call to say that they were on it right then. At 12.30 the Discovery is dropped off with bill for the work carried out. Discs had been skimmed, caliper repaired and none of the brake pads had been used as the ones on, weren't that bad. Whole job cost £150 for the repairs and to put it back together + over £200 spent with Paddocks on parts that weren't even used.

Bruce was not very happy at all.

I bet he wasn't, I wasn't either. They didn't give me a courtesy car until I had a bit of an argument with them on the fourth day!

In an effort to speed this lot up I got the replacement calipers from Paddocks for them to fit. It seemed that I was able to get spares quicker than he was though they all came in Britpart boxes, so were probably from similar sources. All the packing material looked suspiciously like the stuff in the box Paddocks sent me too.

All I've got to do now is return the old ones to Paddocks so I can get my surcharge back.

I much prefer to do all my own maintenance but this time I was stuck.
