carbs on a 3.9 v8 (new needles)

This has been briefly mentioned in my threads before but i thought i'd start again since i now have a running engine!

3.9v8 on the inlet manifold and stromberg carbs from the 101 3.5.

Any idea what needles I am looking for if i wanted to continue to use the stromberg carbs. I run on LPG pretty much all the time but do fancy a reserve petrol tank.

tonight i started the truck on petrol and it does now seem to run lean all through the rev range - its at between 16:1 and 17:1 most of the time.

Rimmer do stock a vast choice of needles but no description of what they are intended to do..

Otherwise -

Lee - any idea how many bits of linkage i need in order to connect up the SU carbs you gave me?

There are NO off the shelf needle profiles for stromberg carbs that are suitable for a 3.9. They are all too lean. If you have the patience, measure each needle with a micrometer at 1/8" intervals, see where it's lean and blend 2 thou off at a time using something like 4000 grit micromesh, do one needle then measure it as a reference to take the exact same ammount off the other. Give yourself about a full day to do this............ Alternatively, fit SU's and use BAC needles. Badger.

Tom Woods uttered summat worrerz funny about:

From them carbs I gave you I think you need the linkage that joins them together.

There should be a rod like a thick bit of coathander that joins the choke on each.

You may need the clip that fastens on the end of that to stop the rod dropping off.

Then there may be some slight difference on the throttle pivot which goes on the manifold. One or the other sets of carbs had a return spring here - dammed if I can recal which.

There is also the pipe work and t piece for the fuel return that will need sorting.

errr

I've got BAW needles stuck in my head - probably wrong mind - Ring Martyn as he had the same issue and has probably gone bigger -- then again I'm sure he went down the carb change route.

I never got the tool to tune the carbs so never really tinkered much with them but they did run all be it roughtly for a short while.

BA bit was right then :-)

Its lean all the way up the rev range when sitting stationary and revving it.

bugger. I was hoping i could do a simple needle swap.

It will probably take me a day or so to swap it over to SU's - so i might aswell go that way.

i did have a look and hold them in place and the linkages seemed really different - hence my reluctance to just chuck em on.

Reckon Martyn is still reading this? oi Martyn! :)

do the su's need another special tool then?

Tempting to fit em with the right needles then get derek the autotune guy round to sort it out ;)

I've probably got a manifold with a pair of SUs on it. dunno if the linkage is intact though.
