defender110

thinking of getting one, and converting it to lpg. i have a budget of about £2000 for the whole lot. is the estimate stupidly low? ideally i would like a 5door with windows in the back. Also, what are diy lpg kits like? how much do you need to know to fit one? would welcome any comments-i dont really know much about landrovers thanks

If you really mean a Defender and not a 110 (the Defender name was introduced after 90s and 110s had been produced for a period, with the Defender came the 200Tdi engine, quite a bit better than the TD), then £2000 will not get you anything that is in half decent condition. (Particularly not 5 door SW)

you'll be lucky to get a worthwhile station wagon for that money. Good diy kits are to be had, but you're looking at 4-500 quid, for one that's worth having with a new, decent-quality tank. Knowledge required to fit it is not too much, but you'd be well advised to get a competent LPG fitter to examine the system before using it.

If you can find one for that money, you will need as much again to repair the bulkhead and chassis, repair the engine and replace the tyres. It's not a bad rule of thumb to set aside 1/4 of your budget for repairing the vehicle you buy. This gets less relevant the more you spend!

£2K might find you a shed on wheels. An earlier 110 (non-Defender) can be had for that sort of money, but unless you have another few quid in reserve you'll need to be very good at the DIY.

You may find a lot more for your money in the early Discovery range...

you can reliably find decent early discos for around the 3 grand mark now, an unconverted V8 would be a bit less. Still need to shop around, and take someone who knows the disco, and knows which bits rot. rear floor is one such...
