Disco 3: strange large knockers :-)

Trying to discover source of klonking noise from rear of vehicle, when driving over slightly pot-holed tarmac.

Underneath the rear bumper, on either side of the spare wheel, there'a a pair of what I can only describe as pendulous dangling weights.

These are a fair old weight, and rather substantial. The can swing back and forth ( front-to-rear ), and they go 'klonk' when they do.

What are these massive knockers? Why are they there?

Are they some kind of a thing to help out if the vehicle ground out at the back?

And why do they go klonk now, when they never used to? Are they missing some kind of under-wired support?

Some feature to 'enhance the experience' for those who don't use their vehicles in anger? It'll be a ride comfort thingy, probably.

Unlikely.

There's something worn. Either a replaceable bush (we would like to think, otherwise the weight itself) or whatever acts as an axle (a bolt?) or both.

If the weights waggle from side to side you'll need to dismantle further to see what's worn.

Sounds like an unnecessary component that's ripe for total removal....... unless someone knows better.

They are 'harmonic dampers' designed to reduce vibration from the transmission, nothing to do with protecting the back end.

Common fault on the D3 is worn ARB bushes, dealer will fix and add shims FOC usually.
