Disco charging fault

Nov 17, 2003 3 Replies

Alternator playing tricks. Tachometer drops to zero, charging light comes on, Tachometer sometimes pulses on/off at about 1 sec intervals, sidelights pulsed on/off also, head lights OK, this could be because a load seems to calm things down-although the charging light doesn't go out completely. Any advice before I bite the bullet and replace the Alternator? Thanks George.

Any signs of damage to wiring or connectors?

Some auto-electrical specialists have the gear to do a thorough test of the alternator -- spinning the alternator and measuring the speed and output. Maybe a better bet than just grabbing a service-exchange unit.

Worn brushes / dirty slip rings?

If you've been in mud, check that the brushes aren't sticking in their sliders and try cleaning the slip rings where the brushes contact.
