200TDi, 300TDi, R380 (and possibly LT77 on early ones) manual boxes and ZF4HP22 autoboxes. Nothing else. Badger.

Thanks for the quick reply, Is there a visible difference between the 200 and 300TDi engines ? were all manuals 5 speed ?

Isn't the easiest to explain way to spot if it's got a serpentine drive belt or a load of individual V-belts? ISTR that being the case, hopefully someone can confirm or refute. 300TDi has serpentine drive belt driving alternator, water pump and um, something else (I forget).

So do the tops of both engines have the air intake ( saying land rover on its top ) on the nearside, inrelation to the rocker cover ?

If it has an ECU its not a 200Tdi I think the single "serpentine" drive belt was not fitted to the 200TDi easy way to check if you have the VIN try

and Badger is correct the LT77S was also fitted both being 5 speeders.

No idea, as you're talking Disco and mine's a Defender, the drive belts are the same though. Seems someone else reckons the 300TDi has the serpentine belt while the 200TDi has the individual V-belts so that should be an easy quick way.

Here's a 300Tdi:

The easiest difference to see is in the thermostat housings, which are quite different. If it looks like this, it's a 300 - if not ...

On or around Wed, 22 Nov 2006 18:51:27 +0000, Ian Rawlings enlightened us thusly:

yep, that's the most obvious difference. flat poly-V belt driving everything (except, I think, aircon if fitted) is a 300.

most 300s have a rubberoid black cover on top of the engine.

The other obvious difference is the brake vacuum pump, but that's more difficult to explain without pictures.

Hi Rich,

The 200Tdi in the Disco had a cylindrical air filter. The 300Tdi has a square filter. The 300Tdi has the rubberised cover as mentioned by other posters, and the drive belt layout is different - I think the

200Tdi had two belts, while the 300Tdi has one serpentine belt for everything but the aircon - alternator, water pump and power steering (power steering pump runs of the back of the belt so turns the opposite way from most!).

I think, but have never confirmed it, but the positions of the fuel lift pump and the brake vacuum pipe were reversed - on the 300tdi, the fuel lift pump is nearer the front of the engine than the vacuum pump.

All very interesting for reference purposes, but as I have now got a cheap

2.8TD Daihatsu and a 4 door classic Rangy for bits :-) so we shall see how it performs with pulling ability ( trailers not girls ) and fuel consumption ect. Thanks for all of yours inputs to my daft idea's I have posted recently, an excellent and friendly news group, keep it up.
