200tdi Injectors

Right - Bit of background.

When my 200tdi has been left overnight, when its started in the morning it runs like s**te. Really lumpy. Loads of white smoke pours out of the back until its been running for a bit, then its back to normal again. You can stop it and start it, and it will be fine.

My theory is that an injector is leaking over time, and filling a cylinder up with loads of diesel. Once its all gone, its fine.

Does anyone know if this theory is possible? Ive been thinking about it today, and this is the only answer i can come up with....

Question is, can the be re-cond, and how can i tell which one it is.

I dont want to pay £50 + each, if only one is damaged.

Christ, thats an odd one! you may be right although i;ve never heard of that. My advice to you is to take your wagon to a diesel specialist and have them tested. I took my injectors out of my old 200Tdi 90 a few years ago and they tested them all then and there for about =A325, pressures and spray patterns the lot. Hard to work out what is though, you'd think that if an injector was leaking diesel it would still have some effect on the running of it generally. Also, i guess if it's not your injectors they might give you a bit of advice what it might be. Its not oil sitting in the turbo is it, burning off when you start the engine?

Dave

If have thougth that the smoke would have been blue if it were burning oil, plus it does not smell like burning oil, but i could be wrong..

Is there an easy way ot check? Ive taken all the pipes off the turbo, and they all look clean.

If it were oil, would it not smoke all of the time??

But where is the fuel coming from when the engine is stopped? Also if so, you would get hydraulic lock and the engine wouldn't crank over.

I bet you have a weak compression and the cylinder isn't firing until you've built some heat up. Also, have you checked the glowplugs? - but a decent

200tdi engine doesn't really need them.

Julian.

I didnt think it needed glow plugs - but ill check all check them at the weekend. Silly question, but the light on the dash comes on so i assume the relay is working... its defo got worse lately.

Poor compression, that sounds drastic.

200Tdi injectors are two-stage jobbies - most reconditioners can only do one stage as a special, or least different, machine is required to do the other and there arn't many about - worth bearing in mind.

There's a reasonable chance, as pointed out by another poster, that the problem is low compression - but it could be an injector. I'd suggest getting the compression tested first off. If that's ok, then get the injectors tested - sooner, rather than later. If the problem is an injector and it's spray pattern has gone (a nozzle falling off, for example) the diesel could be being sprayed directly onto the piston crown, which is a very good way of making a hole in it. However, I would expect quite a lot of black smoke if that were the case.

Mind you, it could be just a very slightly gone/going head gasket, or a slightly sticky valve!

You haven't been running on veg oil have you?

However its been fine since then, (6months odd) and only started doing it now...

Its seriously smokey though.. Can almost hide a car - But once youve gone 100 meters, its fine.

There could be one gone, best method to check is to pull them out and put them across the battery. But my 89 Disco 200tdi engine starts up instantly on a cold morning without preheat, so I doubt that that's your problem. My Peugeots (with indirect injection engines) cough and sputter and pump white smoke out after starting when one or more glow plugs have gone.

The Pugs plugs are a PITA to change, so now I just change them all at the first sign of trouble - at about £6 each it isn't worth the bother checking and replacing on an individual basis.

Julian.

Silly question, but the light on the dash comes on so i assume

A quick check with a multimeter is the way to go.

Guess the sensible option is to kill two birds with one stone. Test the compressions while you've got injectors out and save a bit of time and cash and then you'd rule two things out in one go?

Stick a quart [two or three litres] of ATF [Dexron] in with the diesel when you refill and drive it some distance. It is not a magic or instant cure but it could be all it needs. The full effect will not be seen until you have used two tanks full of diesel. If it works, don't do it as a routine. Only do it when symptoms reappear, perhaps every couple of years.

Huw

What will that do exactly?

It will either do nothing or it will improve it. It might even cure it. Doesn't cost much to find out and there is no risk.

a quart is 2 pints, which is just over a litre.

Isn't there? It's red innit? Wouldn't want to be caught with red diesel in my tank.... TonyB

That's a US quart. One of our real quarts is 1.136 litres.

damn yanks

It could be a bit of bother if you did happen to be dipped. However, they do analyse the fuel before prosecuting and of course they wouldn't prosecute. But hey! If anyone is worried in any way, take it to a garage and spend the dough. I'm certainly not forcing anyone to try it.

My concentration is not that scientific anyhow. About two percent, give or take, should have a beneficial effect. My tractor tank is 100 litres and I chuck in about 2litres as and when needed. This is about every couple or three years when it reverts to chucking a lot of white smoke on cold starts.

What does the Aft do then? Lubericate? Clean?
