I am organising an off-road day next month and need to get Public Liability Insurance for the event, trouble is I can't find anyone who will cover it. All the event specialists on the web don't touch motor stuff and the motor sport companies only insure accredited clubs etc.
Any contacts/ideas folks?

A chap I know had a similar problem, he turned it into a trials day so he could get MSA insurance. Umm, that's all the detail I know ;-)

Yes, we had an untimed trial on Sunday at the Unofficial to get the MSA insurance, the MSA don't like Playdays, too many nutters!

Just to confirm what others have said, when we run Motorcycle Trials we just use MSA. Effectively all you need is third-party insurance as all 'competitors' sign on and waive your liability to their vehicles.
If you're running a timed event then it's a 'race' and must be done as an affiliated club, with all the relevant extra safety measures.
As a 'Trial' there is no time limit or timing of sections so it's NOT a 'race'.
A 'Play-Day' is almost uninsurable as there is apparently little control over it. If you mark out at least on 'Trials' section ... which can be
20' wide and 3' long so anyone can clean it, you can legitimately class the day as an observed trial. You then get all entrants to sign a similar waiver form
;)

Thanks guys, so are you saying we don't need insurance if I do it this way? or if I still do, who so I contact please.

You still need insurance, but if you tell them its a non timed trial, rather than a pay and play day it make it less complicated.

I'm a bit at a loss as to what you were trying to isure through tg=his "loophole"?
If you're laning the public liability should be covered on each individual vehicles insurance policies, if you're playing on a site this should be the same AFAIK but the site owners would probably still need thier own public liability ciover in todays blame obsessed society.
If you are all individuals on an unofficial and either laning or paying to play on a site there should be no need for any extra insurance cover.

The insurance is in case you run some one over and are sued by the other party. This was the day on the site only, not the laning, as you must have current MOT, Tax and insurance to be on a greenlane.

I thought this discussion was about the insurance needed by the organiser, not the participants, as the participants' insurance would not be valid due to it being on private ground and not the public road?

The MSA insurance does cover lots of things, but you have to be an MSA registered club to be able to use it.
There is an element of public liability in the MSA insurance, as well as the driver insurance.

FWIW my group of hooligans who regularly descend into abandoned WWI, WWII and Cold War bunkers have obtained a certain degree of PL insurance via Zurich Municipal Insurance based in Southampton. HTH

Following some recent discussion with my insurance agent I'm pretty certain that your insurance should cover this whether you're on private land or not.

Was this a pay to play site?
If so the site owners should have PL cover and as long as everyone books in independently there is surely no organiser or organised event?
Everyones individual liability should be covered by their own insurance.
