Has anyone had problems with the aircon on td4 2002 freelanders going after
18 months and why?
the only difference apart from lack of cold air is that when engine is switched off there is 5 seconds of a hiss/whoosh noise.

Sounds like it's sprung a leak - happened to me on a Honda and a Vauxhall - they refit the pipes and put new gas in.
I had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the Condenser was faulty. Dealer did the same thing first though and re-gassed it
