Front Wings On a s3 109

Dec 23, 2003 10 Replies

Hi all

Happy Xmas and all the best for the new year hope you all have a good one.

I am new to land rovers and just got myself a series 3 Long Wheel Base I believe its 109 tow truck that has been neglected and left to rot for a bit but I think with some time effort and gaffa tape it will be right as rain.

I have 2 problems at the moment I have taken the front side and indicator lights out and the wing had some white goo on it behind the plates and panel just fell apart ass I took the lights out some nit had also bolted them in instead of using self tapers, is it easy enough to just replace the front panel of the wing or is it a new wing as its happened on both sides I don't like the idea of £80 + for a set of wings

I am still looking for sources of second hand parts I live in the north west and am lucky to be near LR Supermarket a lot of the time and can get to Land Ranger in Queens Ferry if anyone knows anywhere else I would appreciate the advice.

Also just been trying to get the front bumper off and the passenger side bolt nearest the wing has undone some of the way and the head has rounded off what's the best way to get round this im thinking of taking the head of with a grinder and then drilling through the body as much as possible then maybe trying to snap the remains off with a big crow bar.

Once again have a safe and happy xmas and a good new year.

Paul

for what its worth I replaced the front panels pretty easily on my 2A to fit a 110 front and lights (to make room for a Jag 4.2). Changing panels was easy but I'm sure you can do a simpler repair with a bit of flat alloy and some pop rivets?

YEAH HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......... You mentioned my favorite bracketed commet!!!!

:-)

Fortunately Percy came with the later IIa wings with headlights on the outside rather then inset.

Is this an old project or current one Trev?

Hi Trev

Glad im not the only one to have found this problem out

its a new project that started a week ago sunday with a nice leisurly 40mph trip up and down the m56 to manchester :-) rather nice to be able to take in the scenary than my usual 80 /90 mph trip cos I left a bit later for one more brew for the road :-)

There is a bit of work as it has been neglected and stood for a bit but the straight six runs well and starts ok just wont tick over till warm a bit but im putting this down to the fact that the choke has croaked it

Its had a swb body put on the lwb chassie so im looking at paneling it into a pick up cab with a storage locker both sides at the back and taking out the bench seats and puting an under locker too and leaving the crane on the back with a canvas roof over that.

Looking to spend the next 12 months working on to be used as a recovery unit at race meetings and as a support unit for the rescue teams that are there for if were near and the first unit on scene then im hoping to be carrying equipment thats usefull.

As for the wings there the s3 wings I dont mind paying for decent second hand units going to have a trapes round the shows next year see whats what and spend Jan / Feb striping it down to a roling chassie and bulk head and send it down ot our works machanic thats a landy nut to paly with the chassie as I cant weld to save my life so if he can do that it leaves me free to play and clean up all the stuff ready to go back on. With all the lighting equipment chargers radios and electronic goodies I am fitting theres plenty of work to do with the rebuild alone :-)

All the best to you and yours for the festive season

Paul

VERY old, must dig out some pics. Still got the 2A but fitted with a 2 1/4 petrol again now.

Hi all

I think I have got away to get my front bumper off the s3 im thinking of heating the bolt up so its nice and hot with a blow torch and then smacking the holy hell out of it with a 7kg sledghammer and a 1" chisel to try and take the bottom of the bolt with the nut off and then just lift the bolt out and pull the bumper off.

Just wondered if anyone had any other suggestions its been soaked and soaked and soaked some more with release agent and its not giving one little bit so the only thing I can think off is to heat the bolt up and then try again to undo it failing that give it a good smack with paddys screwdriver :-)

If all else fails its cheaper than anger managment :-)

Oh well off to wrap the presents all the bets to everyone out there who is reading this I hope you all have a safe and good one.

Paul

Try a nut-splitter.

It's essentially a screw-operated chisel. Handy little gadgets. You do not need to cut through the actual bolt.

Hi Mate

I had thought about a nut splitter but didn't think I would have the clearance although it may be worth a try its a handy thing to have in the tool box will have another look next time im outside and see what room I have around it and see what size splitter I can get my hands on I know draper do a couple of sizes as I use to sell them

Anyway its some stupid time in the morning and im bored of thinking and reading so I suppose I best go to bed before Santa trys to deliver all my lovely presents :-)

Take care and have a very Merry Christmas

Paul

I must admit the thoughts crossed my mind on the odd occasion...like when the bottom hose blew.. But I think if I ever did drop the Jag lump then it would be for a V8... Given that removal would probably mean a bulkhead removal due to the snugness of the fit then it would probably get done when I fit a Galv Chassis in years to come... no doubt like yourself I'll have the "been there done that.." T shirt.

Would be intereted in how it was fitted.. I know the early Jag gearboxes were the same as the Rangie ones (LT77?) which would be the simplest option.

If you do have any piccies please do forward them and I'll bung them on the site with a little write up as I get quite a few queries as to ways to do it.

Yep the 2A is waiting for its long overdue galv chassis. Trouble is I never seem to have the grand+ free for a 109 chassis and my 90 is still waiting for lockers.

I mated it to the original 2A box (no syncro 1st or 2nd). I had the crank machined out to accept a Land Rover 2 1/4 spigot bush and made an adapter plate in two pieces about 2-3 inches deep, might still have it somewhere. One piece, the spacer, was cut from the front of the jag bellhousing, then a steel conversion plate, about 1/2" thick, was used fitted with studs to accept the land rover bellhousing on one side once bolted to the back of the block and spacer with a set of countersunk allen bolts. Used the jag clutch and land rover clutch release. The clutch slave cylinder had to be mounted out an extra half inch or so to clear the wider bellhousing spacer and one 'wing' of the jag alloy sump had to be cut off and plated over to make room for the front prop shaft.

The front crossmember was cut out and moved forward to make room for the engine and the whole thing looked pretty tickety boo. Downside was the engine overhung the front axle requiring extended bump stops or rasing the front of the engine which was the route I took. This rather spoilt the lines and also meant some bulkhead mods. If I did it again I'd just fit parabolics, long shackles and extended bump stops but I'm not sure parabolics even existed when I did my project.

I do have a couple somewhere. Must dig them out and get them scanned. I've seen some of your posts before and noted your signature with interrest. There are not many of us that have run 4.2s :-)

Good luck with Percy your other projects.

Trev

Cheers, sounds like a nice bit of work! I've got the clearance issue now but I left the sump as was and put a slight dogs leg in the front prop using a centre bearing.. I think that I'll probably end up getting extended shackles too and parabolics as I dare not give him any punishment off road yet :-( He's done some tame offroading but nothing that requires too much articulation.
