Mine seems to register properly between full and half full but is then erratic with the needle sometimes flopping between half full and empty but not flashing the warning light
Is this likely to be a faulty gauge or the sender ?

Most likely the sender.

Either the sender or the wiring (either gauge to sender or on the power supply). It would help if we knew the vehicle. If it is a Series 2a or 3 it could be the voltage stabiliser, although this is less likely. JD
