gearbox or clutch problem?

Hi all

On Saturday morning I was driving my 2003 TD5 110 and noticed I struggled to change gears. Later on the gears started scratching and eventually I couldn't change gears at all. Manage to turn around and drive home slowly.

Later on at home I started again and I tried to put it into gear again but couldn't get it in gear with clutch fully pressed in. Noticed that if I push 1st gear forward the car wanted to start moving even though clutch was pressed in and the gear wasn't even in place...

What could this be - a clutch problem?

Am hoping it's not too expensive.

Car has 165000km on the clock and only had it 4 months. So far been very happy with my car, love the Landy, but can't afford to have a unreliable car that breaks down all the time. (Time & Money)

The car was towed in this morning, and I'm waiting to hear on the workshop...

Any advise or similar experiences?

I would think that this is the clutch that is not disengaging.

you have drive as the car is trying to move as you force first gear.

Might be a clutch fluid leak somewhere... Any wetness down clutch pedal or coming out of bell housing drain hole? Any fluid left in the reservoir? I had a similar problem which was fixed by replacing the clutch slave cylinder, an easy job if you get lucky.

(Having written that I'm wondering if perhaps the TD5 has a fly by wire clutch, or some electrickery involved... Someone who actually knows what they are talking about will probably be along in a minute.)

Hope it doesn't work out expensive,

Cheers,

Could be the slave cylinder, but Td5 Defeders are prone to master cylinders failing as well.

When you say 'scratching' do you mean a scratching noise? May be the shock absorbing springs in the clutch driven plate breaking up and jamming the clutch or clutch pressure plate breaking up. In that case it would just be a normal clutch replacement job that you could get an accurate quote for. Does the pedal feel normal? maybe release bearing or fork.

Almost certainly clutch related, most likely to do with hydraulics. If all hoses are OK, and there are no apparent leaks, the master cylinder is most likely. The internal piston return spring may have broken.

Another possibility is a broken clutch fork. This is usually sudden, though.

Possible, but as the Td5 uses the Series III clutch arm/fork.......... ;-)

Just got my car back this morning... there has been fluid leak for a while... I should've checked this out but the dealer just said all land rovers leak...

Anyways - $715 later for a new clutch and clutch kit.

The knock is g> >
