Ideas Ideas

I just had an idea for my Disco that I've got one slight problem with.

Thought I had was to rip out the 3rd row seats and the surrounds they sit in and then fabricate a couple of moderate sized tanks - 40l or so - with 9" to foot deep lockers in the top of them for storage of dry goods. I'd also want to mount a couple of captive bolts onto brackets on the inside of them to mount a unit similar to the Mobile Storage Systems storage drawers between them.

Now - the problem I have with this is execution - I think the tanks would have to be either stainless or aluminium - I'm thinking of using one of them for diesel and one for water so probably need to use Stainless for both of them.

Unfortunately I've never really welded beyond blowing holes in things with a stick welder.

Anybody around who does this sort of fabrication for money who could give me a guess how much money it would take to do this?

daren't guess though.

Call me. The price depends on the shapes more than the materials. A simple box is a lot cheaper than anything circular for example. I use a good firm in Royton who can help.

I was gonna say that. Their ally replacement petrol tank for the RR classic/disco is very nicely done.

Sitting half a world away any pricing I can do would be pretty pointless, but as a general rule think of a number that seems expensive and double it - this sort of work gives me a heart attack every time I look at the price.

I'd go for aluminium tanks rather than stainless as ally is less prone to work hardening and cracking. Make sure you get them well baffled and remember to put decent sized vent fittings into them (1/2" BSP threaded is ideal).

Find a marine fabricator in your area. They are making stainless fuel tanks all day long. Reckon on about a £100 each tank, minimum. Peter
