Gearbox fixed (was gearbox woes)

I had the same on my Disco. How many 'recon' gearboxes at £1000 a throw have been 'fitted' by dodgy dealers for the price of a bit of bent steel!!

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I nearly went down that road myself and nearly bought a recon box without even driving the vehicle home. I think it was the fact that 3rd and 5th went first before 3rd and 4th, made me think that i probably wasn't in the box, and of course the advice of the board!

the bit of metal that had broken off could have been designed to fit perfectly between the two bolts and jam!!

Have yet to test frive but all looks well

This problem made an indelible impression on me when I pulled up at a road junction soon after buying my 200Tdi. Merrily slapped it into gear, dropped the clutch -- and nearly reversed into the car behind me! A bit of tweaking and the gear change was very sweet.

The next no-brainer is fan belt noise. The squeak of belt on glazed tensioner wheel has been variously diagnosed and "cured" by replacing everything from the water pump to the engine. If you have a spare moment, do a Google Groups search. It is very educational!

I'm glad you mentioned that I had more than a little grief selecting gears when I test drove a Disco 'oop in Cumbria I thought it was just me missing the extra gear when I climbed out of the Merc ( and yes the design on the commercials is as flawed as the cars are supposed to be). Derek
