Insurance oddities again !

As my son can't afford to insure the 1989 Defender 90 (2.5TD, 85BHP), I've said that I'll insure it, MOT it and use it on and off during the next 10 months until his age rises and hopefully the premium drops. In all cases I specified 3000 miles and TPF&T.

So I tried confused.com and got (what I thought were) competitive quotes BUT on closer inspection...

When I phoned one company up they said that as it was a truck cab, it would class as a van and the insurance would go up from =A3110 (on the website) to =A3207. I said, what would be the effect of removing the truck cab and fitting a roof on sides (currently sitting in the car port). A sucking of teeth, then..... well it would be even more expensive as I was modifying the vehicle! (I did point out that this would be no different to what LR would do on the production line), but he was adamant the base vehicle was a truck cab.

I then phoned NFU (who'd quoted me earlier), yes they confirmed they'd quoted for a truck cab, no, there was no additional cost for putting a roof and sides on. That insurance would be around =A3160.

BUT for comparison, I've just renewed my 1971 Triumph Stag (147BHP) insurance (Fully Comp) 3000 miles, 3 litre engine, fully European insurance and breakdown cover. If I total it, I get the bits back for nothing etc. =A397!

Where's the logic in that!

Cheers

Peter
