Is it hot? Is it cold? No idea...

Hi



I have 1984 110 with 3.5 V8 in it. Unfortunately my engine temperature indicator does not show me anything ever (except one time when it was moving randomly, which i narrowed down to a bug crawling inside it and moving the pointer).



Anyway, i think the dial itself is ok. And there seems to be pair of wires connected to the back of it. However, nothing is connected to the sensor on the engine unless an exposed connector i have is not a temperature sensor but something else)



So, may be you guys can help me to figure out the following:


  1. Where on the engine can i find a temperature sensor?


  1. How do i wire the dial to the sensor? The dial has 2 connectors, the sensor (or at least what i think is the sensor) seems to have one. Do i connect live to one connector on the dial and connect the other one to the sensor?

yep. The sensor connect to earth though the engine block. It's normally somewhere near the thermostat housing, on the front of the engine near the top, I think. The wire to go on it is normally blue/green, I think.

  1. Its screwed into the front of the inlet manifold just to the left of the thermostat housing as you peer under the bonnet (at least it was on my 1988 version before I swapped manifolds).
  2. Wiring is live to the meter, then from the meter to the sensor.

What happens is the resistance of the sensor changes with engine temperature, so the current through the meter changes.
