It would happen just b4 Xmas

Went out this morning to start the motor.

Chug.... chug.... chug....

Battery almost flat. No time to do usual checks - earth strap, alternator voltage. Must have replacement as we're on standby because of weather forecast (Staffs Search & Rescue). Battery is 6 years old so it's a fair bet it's passed its use by date.

Ring Halfords to check if suitable replacement in stock

Aaaagh. Totally clueless albeit very pleasant YL on other end of phone.

Surprise surprise Land Rover Defender 90 50th Anniversary limited edition 4.0 litre V8 isn't listed.

O.K. then that's understandable. How about an SAE 800A RC 200 Type 663 Lucas Yuasa replacement for?

Sorry sir we only do them by vehicle model and yours isn't listed.

Checked against RR 4.0 litre of same vintage and my battery is much higher rated SAE than the listed one. Anyone any idea why that should be? I haven't had the vehicle from new, bought it when 2 years old. No signs of any winch ever been fitted. (I checked before I bought it for any signs of serious off-roading.)

If the (previous) owner is anything like me, he/she'll have installed a replacement battery with the highest CCA rating that will physically fit the battery tray/clamp. If I can modify either the tray and/or the clamp to gain some space I'll do it.

The problem with the RR is that there is nor much scope for making battery space.

Type 663 battery is probably one of the most common batteries available and is traded by the shed load by most motor factors, land rover dealers, rural garages and agricultural machinery dealers. It was fitted as original equipment to diesel Land Rovers for many years and shed loads of Massey Ferguson tractors. Expect to pay no more than £50+VAT for a good quality heavy duty version. Budget manufacturers may retail these for upwards of £35+vat. The low prices are a reflection of units built and sold.

I can't see why a battery for a Range Rover wouldn't be ideal - you have fewer electronics to power and the same engine to crank. That is assuming it will fit in the battery bay.

I've bought batteries from Halfords, but you pay well over the odds. I think the last HD one for the Discovery was about £70 and the motor factor one I got after that was £45 for the same rating.

Incidentally, and this prolly doesnt apply to yours, but the Halfords one listed for the Disco didn't fit. The terminals were the wrong way round. As they were recessed simply turning the battery t'tother way didn't work - the cables weren't long enough.

Actually it might apply cos the I was looking at was also quoted for the

4.0 litre Disco. Incidentally Halfords batteries are also manufactured by Yuaso, formerly Lucas Yuaso formally Lucas Batteries.

Yes, now you know why I don't go into Halfords. I go to a local battery supplier who specialises in batteries and electrical systems. I wander in , point under the bonnet and say "I'd like the biggest battery you've got that will fit in there" and within 10 minutes I'm driving away with a nice large battery at 1/2 of what Halfords would charge anyway.

Oh, for those that are interested, if you entend the length of a series II/III battery tray by 2" you can get a Type 664 to fit snugly, which should be more than enough for most requirements.

I tend to have luck at Vantage tyres and Batteries. They actually interogate me before selling me a battery rather than give a hard sell.

Also try North Staffs Tyres and Batteries, they don't have such a personal service but have always had what I need in stock.

You better get it fixed quick, I'm on Nights for the next couple of days so anything could happen! ;-)

Ho Ho HO!!!

So hugh was, like

I got my present insurance mainly because of the lovely girl on the other end of the phone - if I wasn't already spoken for I would have proposed marriage there and then. Hell, she sounded sweet.

Oh yeah, and they were the cheapest too.

Thanks for all the replies. I will get around some of the local specialist suppliers after the break - in the meantime battery charger and extension lead are to hand and LR parked within easy reach of garage.

Had a look in the handbook and it says Battery........380/120/90 Any suggestions as to what that is about?

Richard> spoken for I would have proposed marriage there and then. Richard> Hell, she sounded sweet.

I remember one time some young lady sounded absolutely desirable on the phone and I actually got to meet her a few weeks later.

Talk about a let down. Face like a sack of spanners, to coin a phrase.
