I'm with Lancaster on a classic limited mileage policy, social, domestic, pleasure and commuting. Under two hundred quid fully comprehensive.
Others like the NFU, which some hate...

I went with LV= last year - they offer good price for new policy. £303 for 59 Defender 90 XS with business use - about £50 less for social/domestic/commuting. They are the on-line arm of Liverpool Victoria who've been around a long time.
They hiked their prices enormously a year or 2 back
It was a bit of a struggle to initialy get sensible communication with them, but Adrian Flux eventually did something reasonable for my hybrid. (109 TDi coiler.) We'll see what happens next April/May time.
Prior to that, I'd been with "Acadamy Insurance" who say they are 4x4 specialists, but hiked the premium for the second year by nearly 40%, I had no incidents during my time with them, before or since.
Before that, some 8 years with Footman James, but they put the proposed premium up from about 180 to over 600 (and that for TPFT!) And wouldnt talk at all. However, I know others who have recently moved to them and got good rates for "standard" (if there is such a thing) vehicles.
Since putting the thing back on the road in it's altered form some 9+ years ago, I've not had any "incidents" with it at all.
But, I am a response group member, and that seems to make heck of a difference with some, who see it as class 1 business use, though HMG and the Home Office say otherwise!. Though I "qualify" these days for the
50+ offers etc, none of those well publicised companies would even entertain the thought of what in their eyes is a "commercial vehicle" (anything bigger than a Nissan Micra I think) in any way.Take care.

Sadly true, but good service.
We still get two vehicles (Landy + people carrier) for less than the cost of one on its own from another big insurer. There is a "mutual bonus" (discount), but it's not a lot.
Many thanks to those who replied. I've just come back from a holiday so have not got the time to spare to have a closer look yet. I know what insurance companies are like, Direct Line more than doubled mine after a long time with no claims and would not talk about it. Later I started getting lots of phone calls from the ambulance chasers telling me I could get a lot of money as a result of my accident. It seems possible that someone sent my number in to some claims organisation. Any expert got a better idea?

Loyalty, they think you have some for of loyalty to them and won't go looking for another insurer. Many people don't so they stif 'em.
Had you had an accident? I get a few unsolicited texts a month telling me I'm due several thousand compensation for miss sold PPI. I've never bought any PPI, well not since 1985... They are just phishing, on the basis that everyone has bought PPI, had an accident etc.
Just to confirm I have not had an accident for about 20 years and that was when a woman backed into my car while it was parked and I was in doors. What got me thinking was as I>said Direct line more than doubled my insurance and would not talk about my No Claims. Then I get calls from the ambulance chasers so it made me think that there was a link between them. Thought for the day. Do not buy a house near a school! Robbie
