Ford Sierra 1.8 Pierburg Carb

Hia All,

Wondering what the general consensus is on the damn auto choke on a Pierburg Carb. The problem is the car runs very rough until the engine is warm, and you need to keep the revs up using the accelerator. However it also smells strongly of petrol. Once warm it runs and starts perfectly.

1) Is it worth trying to clean the current carb?

2) Is it best to replace it, or fit a manual choke conversion kit?

Sounds like the choke pull down isnt working and its running rich when the choke is on. you can check the linkage is free and the hoses not split to the diaphrams, also the electrical conections are ok, and the thermo switch, but probably the best bet is a manual conversion.
