Mobil 1

I've always been a big fan of Mobil 1. Use it in all of my vehicles.

About 10 years ago, I had a Jag XJS, and blew the engine because the oil level dropped a lot after putting in Mobil 1. (I should have paid better attention to the level.)

Since british vehicles are known for marking their spot, is the newish range rovers likely to leak more after putting in Mobil 1, or has the formulation of the oil changed that it is less likely? (It appears that rangies still tend to leak a bit.)

not trying to start an oil thread, just looking for other's experiences ...

What engine'd rangie? If a V8 pre-crankshaft mounted oil pump, then it's designed to pump a heavy weight oil in volume (20W50) and if you put a thinner oil in you'll end up with premature bearing wear. FWIW, I put mobil

1 in an old jag XJ6 that I once owned, it had been running perfect for 2 years with good oil pressure and it ran the main bearings within a month of putting the mobil 1 in! Badger.

If you go to

and click on 'what oil for my car?' you can enter various types of Land Rover and it will tell you which Mobil oil to use.

Personally I wouldn't use anything thinner than 15W40 in a Rover V8, but in the 4.4 BMW unit just about any modern synthetic should be fine.

Just came back from a parts store - the foetus behind the desk was telling somebody that Mobil1 0W40 was just what their car needed - "lighter oil means the engine has to do less work to pump it around mayte"

The slight problem was that this chappy was driving a Mog Minor.

Does anybody else see a deceased A-Series sometime soon?

I should have mentioned it's a 2002 with the 4.6. That's the only engine we can get on this side of the pond.

I'd probably use the 15w-50 Mobil 1, but I'm not worried about damage to the engine, the oil is very good. But, rather, the oil can do a great job of seeping through gaskets. That's how I lost so much oil on my jag. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced that ...

Heh: "There was no data found for the vehicle selected. "

No matter, I planned on using 15w-50. It doesn't get that cold here.

vehicles.

appears

fine.

I don't see any particular problem with using 0w/40 in a Morris Minor. The oil is, after all, a 40 at operating temperature and is never thinner than that. If the engine is well worn, then of course a more viscous oil would be preferable to minimise cold oil consumption and to a very small extent, piston slap and valve gear noise.

Mind, Castrol RS would be better, which is 0W60 ISTR.

but I'd not spend 30 notes for 4 litres for an old motor, which is about how much I recall it costing...

'course, if it's had a stage 3 head and race tuning...

I use Mobil 1 0W-40 in my TD5. Only thing better I know of is Quaker State. But that doesn't get imported here.
