Black smoke on acceleration

I accelerate/rev hard and get black sooty smoke, is this my knackered old injectors?

or a clogged air filter, or a badly-adjusted diesel pump.

well I suspect my injectors are knackered as I'm sure I'm down on power, and 225k miles. though I'm due an air filter too

wouldn't hurt to get the injectors done, then. Find yerself a local diesel engine specialist, and get 'em rebuilt, or get a second secondhand set and get those rebuilt and then swap 'em. Then, after doing a full service, you can either retune the pump or get the aforementioned diesel specialist to do so.

which pump is it on yours? Fuelling adjustment on the 200/300 TDi is a piece of wossname, but on some such as Lucas/CAV you have to pull out a plug, line the pump up just so and insert an allen key into the middle.

I was going to get a recon exchange set from paddocks next time I've got £100 spare (half is surcharge). but there must be a diesel place in town, lots of fishing boats with volvo penta diesel engines in, maybe that'd be cheaper.

It's an early 2.5 n/a I'm not sure which type and my books are in the LR which is 15 minutes walk from me, though I may need to go along later. how easy is it on a lucas/CAV?

I've just ordered an air filter so that's covered.

it's got CAV on the top, guess it's the Lucas CAV.

depends. On the lucas/CAV I had experience of, you have to undo a plug in the side, turn the engine/pump to a particular point where a hole in the rotating bit inside lines up with the unplugged hole in the casing, and you poke a 4mm allen key into the middle, where there's a screw. This you turn by about 1/4 turn, I *think* it's clockwise to get more fuel. The you put the plug back in and fire it up to see if it's any different.

but try the injectors first.

sounds a bit hit and miss. i will do the injectors and air filter (fuel filter was done recently) first.

I had a brand new 2.5 n/a from new and except for the first 30,000 it always smoked. I changed the engine in the end for a 3.5 Nissan Turbo and so far its done 280,000 and doesn't smoke.
