I have a feeling that after 5 years it's time for new glo plugs. Never fitted them before ? Are they simply like sparking plugs or more of a problem ? I assume that I simply undo the terminal at the top and then torque in the new ones; however do I have to disconnect the battery when doinh this ? I'd rather not if possible.

Did mine recently (1984 110) and it's a doddle.
remove the nut and remove the connector. unscrew old plug, screw in new plug, torque it in, refit wire and the nut, repeat another 3 times.
no need to remove the battery as the circuit is only live when starting the engine.
mine were all showing damage on the pokey-out-hot-bit, looked like part of it had melted off. they all seemed to be working ok as far as I could tell but I wanted to replace them before winter as I have no idea how long they had been there, could have been the full 20 years.
it's worth measuring the resistance through the new plugs and making a note in your workshop manual incase you ever need to diagnose a possible faulty plug in the future (I didn't as the battery had gone flat in my multimeter dammit).
