i have just bought a 2001 td5 90 with 30000miles in 4th or 5th gear at about 30 to 35mph it makes a very annoying high pitch noise from the gearbox , my dealer says its normal but i dont beleive it, if i cant get it sorted i will consider takin it back and demandin a refund as it is quite loud, ive had plenty of older rovers and never experienced this before, any help would be grately appreciated.

No it is not normal - ask him to fix it or get trading standards get involved.

A whining gearbox is a gearbox on the way out. Being a Land Rover it may well keep whining and still go on for a long long time, but your dealer is telling you porkie pies!
